Talk: The Second Battle of Newbury

Join us to commemorate the 380th anniversary of the Second Battle of Newbury at Shaw House, which became an integral part of the Royalists defensive position during the battle on Sunday 27th October 1644.

Bringing history to life, Dr. Christopher Scott will explore the campaign and battle that saw the Royalist army defending northern Newbury against the combined Parliamentarian forces of Essex, Waller and Manchester. And where the first Civil War could so easily have been brought to a dramatic early end with the capture of the King.

Dr. Christopher L Scott is a military historian, battlefield guide and retired Director of Education at the Royal Armouries.

Before the talk, there will be self-led audio tours of Shaw House available from 6pm, including the King Charles room which is best known for the legend of a bullet crashing through the window on the morning of the Second Battle of Newbury narrowly missing the King. A brass plaque on the east wall marks the spot where the bullet is said to have hit the panelling.

Visitor will also have the opportunity to enjoy a private view of the Dressed for Battle exhibition. With arms and armour on loan from Littlecote House, this is a rare chance to see examples of what soldiers wore and likely fought with during the Battles of Newbury. The small selection on display once formed part of the most important surviving English Civil War armouries before being purchased by the Royal Armouries Museum in 1985.

The café will be open selling light snacks and refreshments.

Friday 25 October | Shaw House | £5 | Audio Tours & Private View 6pm, Talk 7pm
