Join us on a tunnel/bunker tour to discover Cold War secrets buried deep underground on this in-depth experience.
In the 1980s, a portion of the massive Second World War shadow factory tunnel complex built by Rover (WWII section not part of this tour) was repurposed as an RGHQ - Regional Government Headquarters 9.2. A state of the art Civil Defence bunker was created so that, should the Cold War ever have turned hot, command and control could still be maintained for the West Midlands (Civil Defence Region 9). Explore tunnels dug deep beneath a hill in Kingsford Country Park and find out what life would have been like for those sheltering during World War Three in the nuclear era of "Mutually Assured Destruction". Duration: approx 1.5 hours. Meet in the woodland car park on the south side of Kingsford Lane. The car park is located just to the north of the turning for Castle Hill Lane (and caravan park). Post Code DY11 5SW or precise location via the very highly recommended What3Words geolocation app using the three words: "quicksand.hence.forecast". Please wear sturdy shoes - no high heels, flip flops etc. Toilet facilities on site. As well as this 11am tour, there is also a 1.30pm tour listed separately on Eventbrite - click here for details.
